Blueberries and Blackberries 2023

If you have never grown your own Berries, there is nothing more rewarding.  You cannot beat the flavour of homegrown fruits and berries grown in your own back yard.  And with the rising cost of groceries these days, you may want to consider growing your own.  Whether traditional garden, container or raised bed, a well-tended bed of brambles will produce your favourite berries for years to come.  Plant Berries once and reap the benefit for years to come.  Your family will love it.

Blackberries

Blackberries are very easy to grow.  Once this native berry is ripe, get ready for an abundant harvest, picking every couple of days.  Blackberries are very healthy and contain antioxidants that can help lower cholesterol and ward off cardiovascular disease.  They are high in fiber & packed with vitamin C.

Blueberries, as with other easy to grow berries, need a sunny spot, proper drainage and appropriate soil conditions.  Also packed with antioxidants, these self pollinators will offer pounds and pounds of delicious berries!   Blueberries are a super fruit, rich in antioxidants, memory enhancing, aid in anti-aging, and improve vision. The bonus is that home-grown berries just taste better and save money! 

Apache

A thornless, erect blackberry cultivar, it produces large, plump, sweet, and cone-shaped berries that ripen in the first year of planting. It has a higher yield and larger fruit than other thornless blackberry cultivars. It resists orange rust and it ripens later than Arapaho but earlier than Navaho, around the end of June or early July. Navaho is one of its parents.

Arapaho

A thornless blackberry variety that was released in 1993 by the University of Arkansas. "Arapaho" is considered the earliest producing thornless blackberry, generating firm, small-seeded berries on erect stems. Very sweet tasting blackberries grow quickly for the entire first month of summer - concentrated into 4 weeks. Berries are long lasting and have a shelf life of up to 16 days in the refrigerator.

Columbia Giant

The largest-ever thornless blackberries, with enormous conical fruit that can reach an incredible two inches long! Summer fruit is sweet with a touch of tartness, and a hint of raspberry flavor. The vigorous, trailing canes benefit from trellis support. Deciduous.

Bluejay

A fast growing, medium sized, northern highbush variety that ripens mid season. A good yield of moderate sized berries with a delicately sweet flavour. Noted for the incredible ability to retain quality while hanging on the bush for extended periods of time. After harvest the branches turn bright yellow and the leaves change from light green to shades of yellow and orange.

Brunswick

Surprisingly, this is a lowbush blueberry from Nova Scotia rather than New Brunswick. It produces firm, medium-sized, super sweet, dark blue berries. A lovely looking bush, these lowbush blueberries grow into a compact bush, with glossy dark green foliage that turns a stunning red in autumn.

Chandler

Giant, full and robust flavored berries. This is a mid to late season blueberry plant produces the largest berry of any available variety on the market today. Chandler will fruit over a period of 4–6 weeks, and has the ever so sweet taste of a wild blueberry. A pleasure to eat and to grow, this variety is vigorous, with a spreading habit of 5–6 feet. Chandler does well in zones 5–7.

A Northern Highbush Blueberry, growing well in cooler climates which makes it a great selection for our climate. Displaying three seasons of interest, this blueberry bush is both productive and decorative! A handsome bush produces a high yield of sweet, firm & tasty, uniformed, quality fruit.

North Country

A dwarf, cold hardy, hybrid blueberry will reach up to 3' tall with an equal spread and an upright to spreading, compact, densely branched habit. The mounded, “half-high” plants are dotted with white flowers in spring, which give way to small to medium sized berries with the exceptional taste of wild blueberries. They produce early-mid season, ripening in late June to early July.

Patriot

Big and bountiful, this very productive blueberry can produce 10-20 pounds of fruit per plant. It is the largest early season blueberry. The hardy berries are large, firm, with an outstanding, rich flavor. As a bonus, the plant features snowy blossoms in early summer and stunning orange leaves in fall. Planting two or more plants will result in larger yield.

Polaris

A small shrub that is commonly grown for its edible qualities, as well as its ornamental merits. It produces clusters of round, juicy, sweet tasting berries of blue with purple overtones. The shrub features dainty clusters of white bell-shaped flowers with shell pink overtones hanging below the branches in mid spring while the fruit is ready for picking mid-summer. It has oval, glossy green deciduous foliage that turn an outstanding orange in the fall.

Saint Cloud

This bush covers itself with white flowers in late spring and massive numbers of large, dark blue, sweet tasting berries in early to mid-summer, much earlier than many other varieties. A midsized, upright shrub with lots of dense branching! Loves colder climates so is a great choice for our area. Both a vigorous producer and an ornamental shrub! A very hardy blueberry with a bushy upright habit.

Spartan

This early ripening variety is a medium sized shrub, desirable variety for its early arrival & excellent fruit quality. It is a vigorous grower bearing heavy bunches of very large, very firm, sapphire blue fruit. Touted as one of the best tasting with a tangy-sweet flavour in a blueberry that can be as big as a quarter. In the fall you will enjoy beautiful, orange and yellow foliage.

Sweetheart

An incredible two crops of fruit in one year makes this the only re-fruiting blueberry bush. The plants are self-pollinating but will bear more berries if 2 or more plants are present. No pollinators needed to set up 15 pounds of berries per year. White blossoms & a large bounty of sweet, large blueberries on fist-sized clusters adorn this shrub. The fruit has a superior fresh flavor and is also fantastic in baked good and preserves. Grows 5-6' tall and 3-4' wide.
