A Guide to Panicle Hydrangeas

Panicle Hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata), are a showy medium-sized shrub valued for its enormous cone-shaped panicles of white flowers.

They are the most reliably blooming, low maintenance & the most cold hardy, in fact, growing from zones 3-7. They have large blooms typically start white and may turn to pink. Since they bloom on new growth each summer, there is no chance for the flower buds to be damaged by winter cold because they simply haven’t been formed yet. The result is a reliable show of gorgeous blooms every year from mid to late summer well into fall.
The leaves of these hydrangeas are relatively easy to identify when compared with other hydrangeas as they are smaller, thinner, and rougher than leaves of the mophead hydrangea. They are medium green with a matte finish. Panicle Hydrangeas also known as PeeGee (PG) hydrangeas are the only hydrangeas that will form trees. Their central stem(s) can be developed into very attractive trunks.
