A Guide to Big Leaf Hydrangeas

Big Leaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea Macrophylla) have large bold leaves and attractive clusters of long-blooming summer flowers.

They typically grow 3-6’ tall & as wide. Mopheads are the most popular Big Leaf Hydrangea. Recognized by their large flower heads that are purple, blue & pink, however, there are a few white varieties. Lacecap flowers are a flattened flower cluster of small fertile florets. In general, mophead and lacecap leaves are relatively thick & crisp, somewhat shiny, and often heart shaped. They are approx. 4″-6″ long & 3″-5″ wide. Stems are short & often have tiny black or red streaks or speckles. Mopheads and lacecaps have identical leaf forms and require the same growing environment.
