Dark chocolate contains cocoa solids and cocoa butter without the milk and butter that milk chocolate contains. It tends to be lower in sugar and higher in beneficial compounds called flavanols. There have been many observational as well as clinical studies suggesting that eating flavanol-rich dark chocolate is linked to better blood pressure and better blood flow. In order to obtain this benefit, at least 200 milligrams of cocoa flavanols need to be consumed daily in the context of an overall healthy diet. Flavanol content varies across products so a person would have to consume about 10 to 30 grams of dark chocolate per day. In general, the higher the percentage of cocoa, the higher the flavanol content. Moderate consumption-1 ounce several times throughout the week-is practical and beneficial.
